This moist old-fashioned applesauce cake recipe uses pantry staples and warm spices for a tender, flavorful dessert. It is simple to make and perfect for cozy gatherings or everyday treats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for topping, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Stir in the applesauce until just combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until the batter is smooth. Do not overmix.
  7. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  8. If using, sprinkle the granulated sugar evenly over the top of the batter.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the cake cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before serving or frosting.

Notes

  • For an Amish Applesauce Cake variation, you can add 1/2 cup of raisins to the batter before baking.
  • This cake pairs well with a simple Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting.
  • You can substitute half the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier texture.
