Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and water. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into your prepared baking dish, spreading them into an even layer.
  4. Prepare the biscuit topping: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the 1 cup flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Cut in the cold butter pieces using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  6. Pour in the milk and stir just until a shaggy dough forms. Do not overmix.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of the biscuit dough evenly over the apple filling. You do not need to cover the entire surface; gaps are fine.
  8. Brush the tops of the biscuit dough lightly with the 1 tablespoon of melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sugar, if using.
  9. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling thickly around the edges.
