Make easy, sweet and savory mini grilled cheese appetizers using Hawaiian sweet rolls. These pull apart grilled cheese appetizers are perfect for game day or potlucks.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Carefully slice the entire package of Hawaiian rolls horizontally, keeping the rolls connected in their original shape.
In a small bowl, mix the melted butter and Dijon mustard, if using. Brush the inside (cut sides) of both the top and bottom halves of the rolls lightly with this mixture.
Layer your sliced cheese evenly over the bottom half of the rolls. Place the top half of the rolls back on to form the sandwiches.
Brush the top surface of the assembled rolls lightly with the mayonnaise. This helps achieve a golden-brown crust.
Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil. Bake for 10 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for another 5 to 8 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and the tops are golden brown.
Slice the large block of rolls into individual mini cheese sandwiches. Serve immediately as easy party appetizers.
Notes
For a sweet and savory version, add a thin slice of deli ham or turkey between the cheese layers.
Use a blend of cheeses; sharp cheddar provides flavor while Monterey Jack melts well.
If you prefer a stovetop method for a small batch, assemble individual sandwiches and grill them in a skillet with butter until golden brown on both sides.
