Make crispy, baked onion flavored crisps at home that taste just like your favorite snack. This recipe uses a simple method to create savory homemade potato chips with a copycat onion ring flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • For the Ultimate Onion Ring Seasoning Mix:
  • 2 tablespoons onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the potatoes: Slice the potatoes very thinly, aiming for chip thickness. Place the slices in a bowl of cold water for 15 minutes to remove excess starch. Drain and pat them completely dry with paper towels. This step is key for crispy baked onion flavored crisps.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the dried potato slices with the olive oil and salt until lightly coated.
  4. Prepare the seasoning mix: In a small bowl, combine the onion powder, garlic powder, dried parsley, smoked paprika, sugar, black pepper, celery salt, and dry mustard powder. Mix well. This is your ultimate chip seasoning mix.
  5. For a slightly crispier texture, dissolve the baking soda in 1 tablespoon of water and lightly toss with the oiled potatoes.
  6. Arrange the potato slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets. Do not overlap them.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes. Flip each chip carefully.
  8. Bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning. The chips should be golden brown and crisp.
  9. Remove the chips from the oven. While they are still hot, immediately sprinkle generously with the Ultimate Onion Ring Seasoning Mix.
  10. Let the chips cool completely on the baking sheets to achieve maximum crunch. Serve with your favorite dip or enjoy as a savory homemade potato chip snack.

Notes

  • For air fryer onion ring snacks, cook in batches at 375°F (190°C) for 8-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Season immediately after removing.
  • If you prefer a tangier potato crisps recipe, add 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid powder to the seasoning mix.
  • For the thinnest slices, use a mandoline slicer.
