Make this addictive sweet and salty snack using just a few simple ingredients. This buttery toffee over crisp saltines, topped with chocolate, is a quick homemade toffee perfect for holiday gifting.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the surface completely.
In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Once boiling, let it boil for exactly one minute without stirring.
Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the layer of saltine crackers. Spread it quickly to cover all the crackers.
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes. The toffee should look bubbly.
Remove the sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for 5 minutes to soften.
Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer using an offset spatula. If using, sprinkle your desired toppings over the chocolate now.
Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
Once set, break the toffee into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate instead of semi-sweet chocolate chips.
If you want a saltier finish, sprinkle coarse sea salt over the melted chocolate before chilling.
This recipe is excellent for making ahead and storing for holiday parties or as easy homemade gifts.
