Ingredients
Scale
1 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sweet pickle relish or finely chopped dill pickles
2 tablespoons finely chopped capers
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon dried dill weed
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Pinch of salt
Instructions
Combine the mayonnaise, pickle relish (or chopped pickles), capers, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, dill weed, pepper, and salt in a medium bowl.
Stir all ingredients together until they are fully mixed and the sauce is uniform in color and texture.
Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more lemon juice for tang or salt for flavor.
Cover the bowl and chill the tartar sauce for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
Notes
For a richer flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the mayonnaise with sour cream or plain Greek yogurt.
If you prefer a smoother sauce, pulse the ingredients briefly in a food processor instead of chopping by hand.
This sauce is excellent as a dip for french fries or raw vegetables.
