Make the best watermelon margarita with this easy recipe. You can prepare this refreshing cocktail on the rocks or blended as a frozen margarita.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh, cubed watermelon
  • 2/3 cup blanco tequila (Patron tequila works well)
  • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 2 tablespoons agave nectar or simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • Ice (for on the rocks version)
  • Salt or sugar for rimming glasses (optional)
  • Lime wedges and small watermelon wedges for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the watermelon: Place the cubed watermelon into a blender. Blend until completely smooth. Strain the puree through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl to remove excess pulp. You should have about 2 cups of juice.
  2. Mix the base: In a large pitcher or cocktail shaker, combine the strained watermelon juice, tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and agave nectar. Stir or shake well to combine.
  3. Taste and adjust: Taste the mixture. If your watermelon was not very sweet, add more agave nectar. If you prefer it tarter, add a splash more lime juice.
  4. Prepare glasses (optional): Run a lime wedge around the rim of your serving glasses. Dip the rim into a shallow plate of salt or sugar.
  5. Serve on the rocks: Fill the prepared glasses with ice. Pour the margarita mixture over the ice. Garnish with a lime wedge and a small watermelon piece.
  6. Serve frozen: Pour the entire mixture into a blender. Add 1 to 1.5 cups of ice. Blend until smooth and slushy. Pour into prepared glasses and garnish.

Notes

  • For a spicy watermelon margarita, muddle 2-3 thin slices of jalapeño in the bottom of your shaker before adding the liquids.
  • If you want a stronger flavor, let the tequila infuse with a few watermelon chunks for 30 minutes before mixing.
  • Use fresh lime juice; bottled juice changes the flavor profile significantly.
