Ingredients
Scale
4 cups fresh, cubed watermelon
2/3 cup blanco tequila (Patron tequila works well)
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 cup orange liqueur (Cointreau or Triple Sec)
2 tablespoons agave nectar or simple syrup (adjust to taste)
Ice (for on the rocks version)
Salt or sugar for rimming glasses (optional)
Lime wedges and small watermelon wedges for garnish
Instructions
Prepare the watermelon: Place the cubed watermelon into a blender. Blend until completely smooth. Strain the puree through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl to remove excess pulp. You should have about 2 cups of juice.
Mix the base: In a large pitcher or cocktail shaker, combine the strained watermelon juice, tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and agave nectar. Stir or shake well to combine.
Taste and adjust: Taste the mixture. If your watermelon was not very sweet, add more agave nectar. If you prefer it tarter, add a splash more lime juice.
Prepare glasses (optional): Run a lime wedge around the rim of your serving glasses. Dip the rim into a shallow plate of salt or sugar.
Serve on the rocks: Fill the prepared glasses with ice. Pour the margarita mixture over the ice. Garnish with a lime wedge and a small watermelon piece.
Serve frozen: Pour the entire mixture into a blender. Add 1 to 1.5 cups of ice. Blend until smooth and slushy. Pour into prepared glasses and garnish.
Notes
For a spicy watermelon margarita, muddle 2-3 thin slices of jalapeño in the bottom of your shaker before adding the liquids.
If you want a stronger flavor, let the tequila infuse with a few watermelon chunks for 30 minutes before mixing.
Use fresh lime juice; bottled juice changes the flavor profile significantly.
